Dear ,

   Happy Spring! 🌷

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the tragedy that killed 11 people at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver. We are thinking of the victims, their families and the Filipino Community across Canada.

After speaking with community leaders who organize these types of festivals, I asked our City Administration about safely preparing for the many block parties, outdoor markets, and celebrations that will soon be happening across Calgary. The City of Calgary conducts risk assessments of every significant event, and while tragedies like this can never be fully prevented, steps are taken to ensure Calgarians are as safe as possible.

A solidarity vigil was held by the Filipino community at City Hall to honour the victims in Vancouver.

Council News

Increasing the Ward Community Event Fund

Since 2003, each Councillor's office has been given a set amount of $10,000 for their Ward Community Event Fund (WCEF). This fund supports events that Community Associations and other non-profits put on for the community.

Here's an example of the events supported by WCEF in Ward 3:

  • Northern Hills CA's Gift of Joy Program
  • Livingston Winter Festival
  • Haunted Panton Way Block Party
  • Hidden Valley School's Walk & Wheel Week

The Ward Community Event Fund has been doubled from $10,000 to $20,000 meaning there is capacity to support more events.

If you have an event you want to host or have any questions about the application process, you can read about the fund here and send your questions to Sarah at ward3@calgary.ca.

Events like the Haunted Panton Way Halloween block party in Panorama were supported by the Ward Community Event Fund.
