Potholes develop mainly due to moisture penetrating the asphalt surfaced and followed by repeat freeze and thaw cycles, as well as heavy traffic. Additionally, the necessary use of road salt and other de-icing methods inevitably accelerates the deterioration of road materials.
Calgary has experienced significant temperature fluctuations these past winter and spring months. In fact, Calgary experiences more of these destructive cycles than any other major Canadian municipality.
