Constructions and Notices

Neighbourhood Streets Program

Let's celebrate the bike train initiative by our community member Sarah!

Street enhancements made in North Hill helped pilot the new Neighbourhood Streets Policy that Council recently approved in July 2022 to replace Calgary's outdated Traffic Calming Policy from 2003. Small changes like speed bumps, traffic divertors, and traffic calming curbs help to increase pedestrian and school safety. The City is currently working on a new intake process for traffic calming projects with a goal of starting new projects each year.

Peace Bridge Repairment

The Peace Bridge has become an iconic landmark of Calgary since March 24, 2012, it's a beloved gathering space and a key piece of Calgary's cultural fabric. Due to the vandalism in July 2022, The City has decided to use steel tension cables to replace the glass railing panels to maintain the original design of the bridge while also reducing costs for ongoing maintenance.

GreenLine LRT Update

As ATCO Group is installing new natural gas infrastructure underground on 5Ave SW to alleviate future conflicts with the Green Line LRT tunnel, you might have noticed some closures near Eau Claire Market. Click for latest updates of Green Line construction.

The GreenLine LRT Team was at Eau Claire Market to share information about the planning applications outlining the ownership boundaries of the site that will be used for the LRT station and plans for transit-oriented development such as residential, commercial, and office space. There have been many investments in the future of Eau Claire, Prince's Island, Chinatown, and East Village through The City's Downtown Strategy. Full completion of the Eau Claire Area Improvements Program is estimated to be completed in 2023.

Community Safety

With the increase incidents across Calgary, Council has been advocating for increase in mental health support to the vulnerable. With that, the Government of Alberta has announced $124M new funding over two years to expand Alberta's response to the addiction crisis in Calgary and Edmonton. This funding was approved through The City's Community Safety Investment Framework for:

  • Calgarians experiencing homelessness during extreme weather
  • advice to police officers during mental health related calls
  • Community Mobile Crisis Response pilot program which will be run by The Alex for the next 12 month

With the Government of Alberta's $4M Downtown Revitalization grant agreement, you will be seeing increase in:

  • support the recovery of our business community to promote Calgary as a destination city

In collaboration with Calgary Police Service, Alpha House DOAP Team has expanded to various community. The East Village Downtown Outreach Addictions Partnership [EV DOAP] Team was established in the fall of 2022 to respond to needs in the East Village Community. The team assesses vulnerability and risk factors of individuals then offers to take them to a safe place or clinic to address dangers or health issues. Call 211 to have the DOAP Team dispatched.

Snow and ice clearing update

With Council's recent direction to enhance snow clearing services, city administration has designed the winter operations program with the goal to improve response times on city's highest priority roadways to 36 hours instead of 48 hours. While the routes are prioritized based on traffic volumes, the quicker snow clearing response time allows a faster resumption of normal operations on many of the busiest streets and transit routes. Click to learn about snow and ice clearing update.

Council also invested in providing permanent funding for The City's pedestrian clearing operations, including maintaining 24-hour response time on prioritized pathways, sidewalks bordering City-owned property, more than 1,300 high use transit stops and other pedestrian infrastructure.
