WHAT'S NEW?

Fluoride Reintroduction

In the 2021 General Election, Calgary voters supported reintroducing fluoride into the municipal water supply, with 62% in favour.

Fluoride was previously in Calgary's water supply from 1991 - 2011.

After completing infrastructure upgrades to Calgary's two water treatment plants, fluoride will be reintroduced started mid-April 2025.

For more information and FAQs, visit calgary.ca/water/drinking-water/fluoride

Short-Term Rentals

Starting April 1, 2025, there will be several changes to Calgary's short-term rental (STR) regulations as part of the City of Calgary's commitment to adapt to the evolving short-rental market.

These changes aim to balance housing affordability, safety, community impact and enforcement, while continuing to support property owners and the economic benefits STRs bring to Calgary.

To review the changes, visit calgary.ca/str

Game PLAN

On Feb. 25, City Council approved the "Making Waves" scenario from GamePLAN, a significant step to address Calgary's growing population by renewing and expanding recreation facilities.

Requiring an annual investment of $200M to $250M, this plan will:

  • Increase the availability of swimming lessons by 40% per capita
  • Increase bookable hours at ice sheets by 25%
  • Increase bookable hours at indoor fields by 2.5x
  • Ensure that 86% of Calgarians live within 5km of an aquatic facility

Next steps include developing an implementation plan and a funding strategy to minimize reliance on municipal taxes.

Notice of Motion

Capital Conservation Grant - Top Up Funding

I proposed a Notice of Motion to provide one-time capital funding to support Community Associations and Social Recreation Organizations facing financial and operational challenges.

On Feb. 25, City Council approved a $15 million capital budget increase to provide immediate support to address rising life-cycle costs and aging facilities.

This funding is coming from surplus funds from previous years, and supports critical projects that ensure safe and healthy environments for community services, like replacing roofs, HVAC systems, floors, etc.

EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY

Starting April 1, 2025, the Provincial Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy will shift waste management responsibility from municipalities to manufacturers. This change aims to create a more efficient recycling system and reduce the City's costs and result in lower fees paid by Calgarians.
