Engagement Opportunities

Calgary's Short-Term Rental Study

The City of Calgary and the University of Calgary (UCalgary) researchers are launching the first phase of a two-part public engagement on short-term rentals (STRs). This initiative is one component of a multi-year research collaboration between The City of Calgary and UCalgary aimed at developing an evidence-based policy framework for STRs adaptable to market conditions.

From Oct. 19 to Dec. 31, 2023, Calgarians are encouraged to complete an online survey to share insights about how and why they participate in the STR market, how STRs impact communities and what they see as current and future concerns.

Administration and UCalgary are expected to deliver a final report and recommendations to Council in December 2024. Participation in this study will provide important information and insight to the UCalgary research team regarding the dynamics and nuances of Calgary’s short-term rental market, its impacts, its challenges and potential.

Have your say and join the University of Calgary and The City of Calgary in shaping the future of short-term rentals in Calgary. Share your thoughts at engage.calgary.ca/STR.

Updates on City Services

Peace Bridge Repairs & Improvements Project

The construction and repairs of the bridge remains on schedule. We expect to fully re-open the bridge by the end of November.

We expect to see increased construction activity on the bridge in the weeks ahead as more material is ready for installation following off-site preparation. Walking and Wheeling access will be maintained throughout construction; however commuters are still advised to use alternate routes when possible, and to exercise caution in using the bridge as the space to pass over the bridge will be narrow.

Please visit the project website for more details: Calgary.ca/PeaceBridge

100 Trees Planted to Memorialize RCAF 2024 Centennial

Visitors to A. D. Ross Park, located at 2816 Dallaire Ave. S.W. in Garrison Green, will see trees planted in the shape of the RCAF Roundel (symbol of the RCAF). The memorial includes 25 dwarf spruce trees surrounded by 75 densely planted maple trees in the shape of a maple leaf. Tulip bulbs, with a historical connection to the RCAF, have also been planted among the trees and will bloom next spring.

The trees in this living memorial have been densely planted which has proven to support the successful establishment of newly planted trees in some circumstances. The trees will also benefit from enhanced soil that has been added to the park and mulch to retain moisture. Watering and scheduled weeding will take place for the next five years to support the establishment of the trees and the tulips.

Planting more trees in public spaces also supports The City’s goals to increase Calgary’s urban tree canopy by nine per cent by 2026 and 16 per cent in the future. An increased tree canopy provides more homes for wildlife, birds and insects; reduces soil erosion; keeps urban environments cooler; captures carbon and absorbs pollutants.

Watch for more information next year about the RCAF 2024 Centennial recognition event at A. D. Ross Park. For more information about the RCAF 2024 Centennial, visit rcaf2024arc.ca

Winter Snow Preparation

With the first snowflakes of the seasons arrival, The City is ready to respond this winter season.

Highlighting our commitment to public safety and efficient winter maintenance, we have been gearing up to keep Calgarians moving throughout the winter months.

Each year we look for improvements to our snow response, and this season we will continue to prioritize removal of barriers of snow and ice along our priority routes. Our winter maintenance strategy includes round-the-clock availability for crews to provide Calgarians a safe and reliable transportation network. Whether you walk, wheel, drive or take transit, there is a dedicated team ready to tackle snow and ice, helping you reach your destination using an array of specialized equipment and machinery.

"Our crews work day and night, to ensure that our transportation network remains safe for commuters during the winter months," said Chris Hewitt, Manager of Mobility Maintenance at the City of Calgary. "With our 24/7 operational readiness, we aim to minimize any disruptions caused by weather conditions and maintain high standards of public safety and convenience."

We encourage all of those living and visiting Calgary to prepare themselves for the colder weather, no matter how they travel. Ensure you are dressed appropriately and plan your route. If you’re driving, consider winterizing your vehicle in advance and leave plenty of time to get to where you need to go. If you’re walking or wheeling, be sure to dress in layers and wear proper footwear to help manage areas where ice could be present.

We’re also reminding businesses and property owners of sidewalk responsibility following snowfall. While The City does clear sidewalks next to City owned property, most sidewalks in Calgary are the responsibility of the adjacent property owner. Adjacent sidewalks should be cleared within 24 hours of snowfall end. Stay safe while shoveling: Ensure you are bundled up and take any necessary breaks should you require them.
