Housing and Affordability Task Force Recommendations: Request for engagement

Housing affordability impacts all Calgarians.

The Housing and Affordability Task Forces’ 6 recommendations comprising of 33 actions come before Council on September 14th.  Hearing the opinion and perspective from our community members on the recommendations is vital to Councillor Wong’s thoughts prior to the council meeting. The link below to the Housing Task Force page outlines the 6 recommendations & 33 Actions, what it would mean if said action was approved, and how that action would affect Calgary. With the information provided we are asking for you to share your thoughts, perspectives, and feedback with our office. The Housing recommendation page has information on how to speak at public hearings if you wish to do so as well.

The Ward 7 office is committed to open and transparent conversations about Housing affordability and the Recommendations brought forward by the Housing and Affordability Task Force. All comments received by our office through email (Ward7@Calgary.ca) or through our Online Portal (Link here) will have comments returned by September 8th. Measuring Main Streets

Successful main streets bring people together. To help understand how Calgary’s main streets are doing, The City of Calgary is conducting the annual Main Street Metrics Program, which will collect and track data related to how our main streets:

  • Support a social and healthy environment.
  • Facilitate improved mobility and functionality.
  • Demonstrate a unique character and identity.
  • Create areas of economic vitality.

As someone that uses our main streets everyday or just occasionally, your insights are very valuable to this process! These inputs will be used alongside other types of data to help paint a comprehensive picture of the current successes and challenges of each main street.

To find the survey’s and learn more about Calgary's Main Streets, visit calgary.ca/mainstreets.

Public Survey

Do you visit main streets? Take this survey to share insights about the user experience, such as how safe you feel, what types of businesses you visit, and more.

Business Survey

Do you own a business on a main street? Take this survey to share information about your business to help us understand the economic vitality of the street.

Constructions and Notices

Sunnyside Flood Barrier Project

The City of Calgary is committed to building the Sunnyside Flood Barrier, a project that will reduce the risk of river flooding in the communities of Sunnyside and Hillhurst. Preparation work will begin in September 2023 and the majority of construction will take place in 2024 & 2025. Here is what to expect:

What type of work will be taking place?

Through summer and fall 2023, The City will be completing pre-construction activities along the Memorial Parkway area to prepare for construction of the Sunnyside Flood Barrier. This work will include:

  • site work, including drilling to confirm utility locations and rock and soil characteristics
  • Wildlife scans
  • Tree removal

Large equipment such as drilling rigs, vacuum trucks, and pickup trucks will be on site. Please refer to the map at the bottom or here for work locations.

Utility services (power, communication, water, sewers) are not expected to be interrupted while work is underway.

Will access remain open for pathway users and drivers?

Access for drivers and pedestrians along the Memorial Parkway area will be maintained, however temporary closures and detours may be in place. Expected impacts include:

  • Temporary staggered closures in the right-hand eastbound lane of Memorial Drive
  • Local access to 5 Street and 8 Street N.W from Memorial Drive
  • Staggered closures and detours along the pedestrian and bicycle paths

Temporary fencing will be installed around work areas for safety and detour signage will be in place to direct pathway users. Please follow all signage posted in the construction area, including speed reductions for wheelers.

When will this work take place?

Pre-construction work is expected to begin in September 2023.

For more information, please visit calgary.ca/SunnysideFloodBarrier

Kensington Road Traffic Safety Improvements

In the summer of 2023, temporary measures will be put in place to improve safety along Kensington Road.

These changes will see Kensington Road reduced to one traffic lane in each direction between 16 Street N.W. and 23 Street N.W. Temporary traffic calming curbs will be used along the corridor to block the curb lane from vehicle use.

This project is in response to findings from a recent safety and operational review looking at collisions in the area. Based on traffic safety analysis, the changes are expected to reduce incidents and near-misses involving motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Memorial Drive Extension

The City of Calgary is undertaking a Functional Planning Study (FPS) for the extension of Memorial Drive from Abbeydale Drive to the east city limits at 116 Street E. The roadway extension is part of The City’s plan to establish better connectivity between communities and businesses on both sides of Stoney Trail.

The roadway extension will include a new crossing of the CN rail line and an east-west overpass across Stoney Trail (without on-or-off-ramps from Stoney Trail). All options also include connections to the Rotary Mattamy Greenway to enhance active mode connectivity for those walking and wheeling.

We have posted the What We Heard Report, which took place May 1-22, 2023, to our website. Our goal from Phase 2: Explore was to develop and evaluate potential design concepts based off the community priorities and feedback we heard during Phase 1: Discover.

We’re pleased with the continued interest shown by the community: we received 3,591 engagement portal page views and 282 contributions of feedback. You can find additional details on the engagement opportunities, how we communicated with the community, and verbatim comments in the full report.

We’ll continue our conversations during Phase 3: Reveal later this fall. The team will present the preferred design concept for feedback and review. Once Phase 3 dates are confirmed, we will share more information on our website.

For more information about the study and to learn about Phase 3 dates and engagement opportunities please visit Engage.Calgary.ca/MemorialDriveEast or contact us at MemorialDriveEast@Calgary.ca.

Calgary Transit's RouteAhead continues keeping Calgarians moving

Recently, City Council approved RouteAhead: a 30-year strategic plan for transit in Calgary, which outlines direction for both enhanced transit operations and capital investment to ensure Calgary Transit provides continued value to Calgarians. RouteAhead, approved July 4th, works as an enabling strategy to achieve the goals of the Calgary Transportation Plan and Municipal Development Plan.

First introduced to Calgarians in 2013, RouteAhead was created with a built-in review process to take place every 10 years. This was done to ensure the plan is keeping us on track as our city continues growing. "This is an investment over time and we need to catch up with our infrastructure, our buses, our hiring, to go along with that frequency increase," said Calgary Transit Director Sharon Flemming. The plan highlights necessary resourcing to build the Primary Transit Network, and also improvements to the customer experience for easy access to jobs, schools, appointments and activities.

The Primary Transit Network is an approach to delivering service that will connect major corridors and activity centres throughout the city, with service running every 10 minutes or better, at least 15 hours a day, seven days a week. Implementation of RouteAhead will lead to a faster, more frequent and reliable citywide transit network, improved customer experience and more transportation choices for Calgarians, which are in line with achieving a resilient Calgary. "The city we want to build and that we are building is socially, environmentally and economically resilient and transit is a key way to achieving our resilience goals," said Calgary Transit’s Executive Advisor Jordan Zukowski.

NEW! Climbing Boulders at Millennium Park

Climbing has seen a dramatic rise in popularity over the last few years and has even become an Olympic sport. Millennium Park is now home to three climbing boulders. These new climbing boulders are an aesthetic piece of landscape architecture that allow both new and experienced climbers the opportunity to boulder outdoors on natural rock.

Notices

Right Call. Right Response.

A safe community means feeling comfortable wherever you are at all times of day. We all deserve to feel safe, no matter where we live, work, learn, or play. This list helps you to connect to local teams that can help you when you are presented with situations that could make you feel unsafe.

Four-legged Friends Seeking Homes

For a limited time only, adopt your furever companion at Animal Services at a Reduced Rate! Now only $100.00, the adoption fee covers:

  • spay or neutering surgery
  • microchip implant for identification
  • 12 Month City of Calgary Licence
  • First set of vaccinations (excluding rabies)
  • De-worming
  • A bag of pet food

Shelters and rescue agencies in Calgary and the surrounding area are currently at capacity with an overpopulation of homeless animals. Due to the overwhelming number of animals, the City has reinstated its adoption program to assist with this crisis.

Adopting from Animal Services not only provides a loving home for a deserving animal but also helps reduce the number of homeless pets in the community and supports the important work of the shelter. By adopting from a local shelter, individuals can make a direct impact on saving a life and contribute to the overall welfare of animals in their area.

Anyone interested in adopting a pet is encouraged to check out the adoptable animals on calgary.ca/pets.
