October 5, 2023

Dear ,

It's officially Autumn! The trees in Ward 3 are looking beautiful as they change colour and drop their leaves.πŸ‚

On a personal note, my husband and I welcomed a healthy baby boy on September 23rd. We’re enjoying the newborn snuggles, and my office remains open to assist you with any concerns.

While City Council approved a 4-year budget last year, Council and City Admin meet every November to ensure that city services still meet the evolving needs of Calgarians. Emerging issues like Transit Safety and Security mean that tweaks and re-prioritization are often warranted.

Budget week begins in November. City administration has released an overview of the investment recommendations ahead of time. These options for investment are open to public feedback and can be viewed here. Your feedback helps us make better decisions, so I look forward to hearing from you!

Council News

The City of Calgary's Housing Strategy

You may have heard that City Council was deliberating a new Housing Strategy in mid-September. Over 150 people came to speak about issues of affordability and land use.

Council voted 12-3 to accept the recommendations of the Housing Strategy, with a few amendments made by Councillors. I voted in favour of the strategy and you can read my full thoughts on my voting record page found here.

I believe all levels of government need to do their part to tackle the rising cost of housing. The strategy isn’t perfect, but it’s a really solid start. The most controversial part of the strategy (base RCG rezoning) will have its own hearing and engagement over the coming months and will be voted on separately.

You can read the full strategy here.

In The Ward

New Off Leash Area - Harvest Hills

New Off Leash Area - Harvest Hills

The City has put up a temporary off-leash area at Country Hills Rd NW and Harvest Hills Boulevard that is now open to the public. The off-leash area will remain in place until portions of the site are developed in the near future. After that, a smaller off-leash space will remain as a portion of the area until the land is needed for the Green Line.

This off-leash area will be maintained in accordance with the existing standards across the city. It will be mowed at regular intervals throughout the mowing season, which will soon be coming to an end as the colder weather approaches.

Removal of existing thistle and weeds is scheduled for the next several weeks. My office will continue to work with Administration to address potential leveling and hole maintenance caused by local wildlife.

A big thank you to the Transit and Parks departments for working to utilize this space to meet the needs of the community.

General News & Reminders

Public Art Funding, Purple Street Lights, and Mobility Safety

Community-run Public Art Microgrant

Community-run organizations across Calgary are invited to apply for funding to hire local artists and create public art in their neighbourhoods. Non-profit groups, neighbourhood associations, and informal community serving groups are all eligible to apply. Ward 3 has several neighbourhoods with no public art that will be given a small application bonus if they apply! View the application requirements and process here.

LED Street Lights Defect

You may have noticed that several streetlights are now blue or purple. This change is actually a manufacturing defect in the LEDs, as their phosphorous coating has worn off. This defect is a known issue with this manufacturer, and they are working to resolve the chip defect and ensure consistent lighting quality. While the City did purchase some luminaires from this manufacturer during the supply chain disruptions of COVID-19, they are no longer doing so. The City and Alberta Transportation (who maintains the Stoney Trail lights) will monitor accordingly.

Mobility Safety Education Toolkit

The City's Mobility department (formerly Roads) has created a Mobility Safety Toolkit to encourage traffic safety conversations with school aged children. Just as young adults must learn to drive safely, children also need help learning and practicing how to walk and wheel safely. The toolkit, which includes an activity book, a video tutorial, and a conversation guide, can be viewed here.
