March 2025 Newsletter

March 3, 2025

Dear Briana,

February was a month of big decisions for Council! One i'm especially proud of is GamePlan, our new 25-year strategy to expand recreation in Calgary. Since taking office in 2021, I've championed better acess to sports and leisure facilities, and this plan ensures we keep up with demand.

If you or your kids use recreation facilities, you know the challenges - full soccer fields, long waits for swimming lessons, and limited ice time. Calgary's rapid growth has outpaced investment, leaving older facilities in the inner city and unmet needs in newer communiities. We must act now to ensure equal access for all.

Council has approved the strategy, but funding will be decided in the next fudget cycle (November 2026). With new leaders at City Hall, your vote will shape the future of recreation in Calgary - so keep this in mind when choosing your next Councillor and Mayor.

This chart shows when our facilities were built.

This chart is the proposed investment levels to truly match demand.

Council News

Extended Producer Responsibility - Updates to Recycling

Council approved changes to our Waste and Recycling Bylaw that will bring Calgary in line with Albeta's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Legislation. This program transfers the responsibility for managing certain recyclables and hazardous materials from local governments and taxpayers to the producers, like retailers and manufacturers.

EPR is intended to encourage producers to design and produce less wasteful packaging, and choose better materials for the environment and recycling process.

These changes will begin April 1, 2025. Residents will receive the same service levels, but your blue cart monthly fee will drop from $9.34 to $2.17.

Currently this new process will only apply to single family homes, but multi-family properties are on the horizon for 2026.

Capital Conservation Grant for Community Groups

The Capital Conservation Grant (CCG) was established to support major lifecycle and capital conservation projects in facilities so that volunteers and staff within Community Associations and Social Recreation Organizations can continue to provide services to the public.

The fund was started in 2023 and allows for up to $300,000 in funding for capital needs like floors, roofs, parking lots, courts, etc.

Last week, Council approved a $15M top up of the fund. Applications for the next round will open on March 24th. You can read the full details on the top up and the grant application process here.

Nose Creek Area Structure Plan - Engagement

The Nose Creek Area Structure Plan (ASP) will provide a guide for future development within the 675 hectares of the Nose Creek Area. This is not to be confused with the on-going work on the Aurora ASP. I understand how important both of these areas of land are to our community, and I recently brought forward a Notice of Motion to explore the feasibility of keeping portions of the land as public green space.

The ASP document guides land use patterns, transportation and utility networks, and implements broad planning objectives. As the City creates a new Plan, they're hosting engagement to solicit resident feedback.

On March 5th, you can drop in from 5-8PM at the Livingston Hub. My team and I will be attending and we hope to see you there. You can view the full details on the project and send in written feedback here.
