SEPTEMBER/ 24

Students are back to school, and it's important that we keep them safe as they go to and from class using our streets, roadways, pathways, and sidewalks.

Routes will be busier and more congested. Please remember to slow down, park smart, and give space as school buses pick up children, kids on bikes rush to class, and adults drop off before work.

As the summer season transitions into a new school year, drivers need to prioritize safety - especially near schools where increased activity poses potential risks for both drivers and children.

Thank you for your caution and commitment to road safety!

CRITICAL FEEDER MAIN REPAIR

As the City has been sharing over the past few weeks, the Bearspaw South Feeder Main has required repairs at several locations. Once the City had access to use the advanced PipeDiver technology, the inspection revealed that there were critical locations that could have failed during the course of the winter. Such failures could have resulted in a city-wide boil water advisory.

To avoid these future complications, the City proactively taken measures of shutting the pipe down while it can be properly repaired and flushed. We understand these measures are inconvenient, but they are necessary to prevent a critical failure during the winter months when they can't actually fix it properly.

This shutdown will continue through the end of September. We are currently relying primarily on the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant for our water supply. I'm sorry to ask, but we just need to hang in there for another three weeks and then we will be back to full operation in the month of October. While there are other medium-to-long-term pipe rehabilitation plans, there should not be a recurrence in the foreseeable future.

Please folks, do your part as much as possible. To ensure water demand is balanced with the limited supply, we need to adhere to the stage 4 water restrictions. It is important that we meet these restrictions, to ensure water availability for essential needs like drinking and firefighting.

Thank you to everyone - residents, businesses, regional partners and visitors to our city - for your patience and cooperation.

2024 MID-YEAR PROGRESS UPDATE

Yesterday, on September 4, the Executive Committee of Council received an update on the City of Calgary's progress during the first half of 2024. You can look at an overview of the progress made and the challenges faced while implementing the 2023-2026 Service Plans and Budgets by visiting calgary.ca/ProgressUpdate.

A highlight in the report shows that Calgary is a leader in property tax affordability, at approximately 2.2% of the average household income in Calgary. In comparison, Toronto was 5.9%, Vancouver 5.6%, Ottawa 4.2%, Winnipeg 2.6%, and Edmonton 2.9%.

Visit the dashboard to see other statistics and reports. Reporting on performance is an important way for Administration to supply regular updates to Council and Calgarians on service plans and budgets.
