Protect your water lines and meter from freezing!
Every winter, some Calgarians face frozen water pipes, service lines, and meters, leading to water outages. The City’s Frozen Pipes Prevention Program helps homes at higher risk due to factors like location and pipe configuration.
Recently, even lower-risk homes have experienced frozen pipes. To prevent this, you can:
- Keep your thermostat at least 15°C, even when away.
- Eliminate drafts in unheated areas with water lines (basements, attics, garages, etc.).
- Repair windows, check doors, and insulate to block cold air.
- Insulate pipes in cold areas.
- Open doors and cabinets to let heat reach pipes.
- Turn off, disconnect, and drain outdoor water lines.
- Ensure maintenance rooms with hot water tanks are heated.
- Regularly run water through your pipes.
