November 2023 Newsletter

November 3, 2023

Dear ,

❄️Calgary has had its first official snowfall of the season - hope everyone is staying warm!

Earlier this week, I popped into the 10th anniversary of Dustin Milne's Halloween block party in Panorama! Check out Dustin's Halloween display featured on CTV news here. Thank you Dustin and all other Ward 3 residents who go the extra mile for the community!

November also brings Veterans' Week and Remembrance Day. This year I'll be attending the Field of Crosses tribute on November 11th to honor those who have given their life in support of peace. Lest we forget.

Council News

2023-2026 Service Plans and Budget Adjustments

Every year, City Council and Administration make adjustments to the current four-year service plans and budget to suit the evolving needs of Calgarians. The upcoming adjustments happen this month, and the public is invited to speak on November 20th to let Council know your priorities.

This year, Administration has put together a list of the proposed adjustments, which will be amended and voted on by Council. Residents are invited to review the proposal and give written feedback here.

There are three ways you can speak to Council: written response, calling in, or coming in person. You can register for any of these methods at the November 20th Public Hearing here.

In The Ward

Transit in Livingston

I'd like to thank all the residents who have raised their transit concerns with my office. We have heard about concerns with both the On-Demand system in Livingston as well as the #124 Evanston route. I have brought your concerns to the City's Transit department. You can read about the work that is being done now their full responses to common questions here.

Hanson Ranch Roundabout Survey

Over the years, Hanson Ranch residents have expressed their concerns with traffic flow and pedestrian safety at the intersection of Hidden CK BLVD x Hidden CK Way x Hidden CK Heights.

If you are a resident of Hanson Ranch or one of the surrounding areas, please take the survey to provide your feedback.

General News & Reminders

Food Drive, Short Term Rentals, and Station Closures

Annual City-Wide Food Drive

The annual food drive for the Calgary Food Bank kicks off December 1st and runs until the 11th. I'm excited to participate in such a great initiative again this year! Ward 3 will have two main drop off locations: VIVO and Livingston Hub. You can also donate directly to the food bank through CanadaHelps. Around 700 households a day are serviced by the Calgary Food Bank, and these donations go directly to those who need them most. This link will go live on November 30th. If you're able to give, this is a great initiative to support.

Short Term Rentals

Last year, I brought forward a Notice of Motion on Short-Term Rental (AirBNB/VRBO) regulation. As part of this work, the University of Calgary is conducting engagement with residents & short-term rental hosts. Getting the right balance of rules and regulations is critical to great neighbourhoods, affordable housing and our tourism industry.

You can view the engagement piece of the study here.

Station Closures

From November 24-December 4, due to the construction of a permanent station, Victoria park/Stampede Station will be completely closed for service. As a result, Calgarians can expect:

  • Closure of the Red Line from Chinook to City Hall with replacement shuttle service.
  • Lane closures on northbound Macleod Trail from 25 Ave to 12 Ave SE.
  • Detoured pedestrian access to Stampede Park.

The area will be congested, so if you're able to work from home, take full advantage of that.

You can view the full details here.
