March 2025

Hello

Spring is around the corner, and March is a time of reflection and celebration. The Ward 7 Office wishes to acknowledge and celebrate with those who observe the Holy Day of Ramadan (Feb 28–March 29 – Ramadan Mubarak), International Women’s Day (March 8), International Mathematics or π (Pi) Day (March 14), St. Patrick’s Day (March 17), and the Spring Equinox (March 20).

March is also Community Association Awareness Month, and we would like to recognize the 19 community associations in Ward 7 that bring together 21 communities. We extend our gratitude to the staff, leaders, board members, and volunteers for their invaluable contributions. Bravo, everyone!

As the weather warms, Calgarians are gearing up for soccer, football, pickleball, golf, tennis, cricket, and other sports and recreational activities. However, we continue to hear that Calgary lacks sufficient playfields, field houses, indoor court facilities, ice sheets and arenas, and aquatic facilities. Despite being a growing city of 1.6 million people, Calgary has not kept pace with the need for new recreational facilities, community upgrades, or life cycle maintenance initiatives.

Last month, Council approved GamePlan—a 25-year strategy to expand and diversify recreation facilities across the city. The selected Making Waves strategy will allow The City to "catch up" over the next 25 years, requiring an estimated annual capital investment of $250 million, totaling $6.25 billion over the program's duration.

Since the start of the new year, our office has been focused on finalizing the Riley Communities Local Area Plan and the South Shaganappi Communities Local Area Plan, as well as amendments to the North Hill Communities Local Area Plan. With most of this work nearing completion and updates to the Municipal Development Plan (Calgary Plan) deferred to 2026, our office will shift more focus toward public safety and security—particularly in the downtown core—addressing neighborhood needs, and supporting seniors and youth.

As your City Councillor, I hope my team and I are meeting your expectations and working toward a better Calgary than when I first took office in October 2021. It is an honour to serve as your representative.

Warm regards,
Councillor Terry Wong

Council Approves GamePLAN to Transform Public Recreation

Calgary City Council has approved GamePLAN, a long-term vision and strategic framework for the city’s public recreation system. GamePLAN addresses the needs, gaps, and overlaps in public recreation, guiding investment as facilities age and the population grows. It aims to improve quality of life, foster community, and ensure Calgary remains one of the world’s most livable cities. With over 6,000 touchpoints, GamePLAN reflects the voices of service delivery partners and the public. The approved Making Waves scenario requires an annual investment of $200M to $250M, setting the direction for future budget cycles and ensuring sustainable, inclusive, and effective recreation services.

Catch Basin and Water Pooling

Keep Storm Drains Clear: When it’s safe, remove ice, snow, and debris like leaves and sticks from storm drains around your property. This helps melting snow and rainwater flow into the storm sewer. Use our interactive map on calgary.ca/stormdrains to locate storm drains near you.

Report Water Pooling: If a storm drain is covered with thick ice or water is pooling on your street for more than 90-120 minutes, take a photo and submit a Catch Basin Concern through the 311 web or mobile app. This is the quickest way to report issues, and photos help our crews prioritize responses.

Maintain Eavestroughs and Downspouts: Clear debris and ice from eavestroughs, downspouts, and swales. Ensure water from downspouts drains at least two metres away from sidewalks, pathways, and building foundations. Direct the flow towards the street, lane, or swale, not towards your neighbor’s property.

Drive Safely: Accumulated water can hide road hazards like potholes or debris. Drive slowly to avoid creating spray that could impair the vision of pedestrians, cyclists, or other drivers, and to prevent potential damage to your vehicle.
