Hello Ward 12,

Summer is here and I hope you and your family are meeting it full of anticipation for the opportunities it holds. Read on below for more information about Canada Day and other fun, free activities happening within our City and Ward 12.

Our office is hearing about the concerns with the maintenance of our greenspaces, including garbage pickup and dead trees and shrubs. At the end of July, our office will be doing a Parks Tour within our ward to discuss these concerns onsite. Although many areas have been brought to our attention already, we would like to hear from the communities and those that use the spaces directly by filling out our survey.

We do request that each concern is first reported to 311 so there is proper documentation directly with the City before it is reported to us through the survey. Visit www.calgary.ca/311, click “311 online request” then the “request service” button at the top of the page. From there, use a search term such as “park” to see the options that will likely apply to your concern.

It is important to note that the City has a base level of maintenance that it does around the City. Typically, watering is reserved for playfields and other spaces such as playgrounds are not watered. You can read more about this here: Water Use in Parks (calgary.ca)

Please reach out anytime via email at ward12@calgary.ca, call the office at

Property taxes are due today Friday, June 30! On July 1, a 7% penalty will be applied to your bill (and then again on October 1). You can pay directly to the City, or through your bank. Find more information about payment options here.

Misplaced your bill or are not sure if you received one? Homeowners can call 311 to receive the information directly from them.

Interested in your property tax breakdown?

Visit www.calgary.ca/property-owners/taxes to read more about property taxes and reach out to 311 or our office with any questions you may have.

Happy Canada Day, Ward 12!

A full day of free, family-friendly Canada Day programming is planned for Fort Calgary, St. Patrick’s Island, Olympic Plaza/Municipal Building and other downtown locations on July 1. This year’s celebration features an Indigenous showcase and powwow, and live music. Check out the full schedule of events and activities at calgary.ca/CanadaDay.

Canada Day will end with a fireworks show at approximately 11 p.m. launched from Stampede Park (note: The Stampede grounds will be closed to the public and is not a viewing location due to the setup of the 2023 Stampede.)

More information about getting around, and facility information for the holiday.

School is out for most kids now! Looking for some fun FREE activities to entertain them this summer? The City has some fun options at www.calgary.ca/free

McKenzie Towne Council parking lot (40 McKenzie Towne Blvd SE)

Accepting:

City of Calgary garbage truck items

Electronic Recycling

Metal & Appliance Recycling

Clothing and Furniture donations for Calgary Drop-In Centre

Copperfield – Mahogany – Sept 2nd, 9am – 2pm:

Mahogany Beach Club parking lot (29 Masters Park SE)

Accepting:

City of Calgary garbage truck items

Everyone is free to attend any community cleanup throughout the City.

This past week new bylaw changes were considered related to RV Parking in Calgary. You can find the item here and also the video footage of the debate. I knew this was an item of interest to the Ward and prioritized being at Community Development Committee that day amidst my other regular committee duties. In the end, most of my colleagues were not comfortable with moving the proposed changes which means the rules will stay the same for this summer. Continue to follow the conversation and policy work with the link below and don’t hesitate to reach out should you wish to express your thoughts directly.

A few months ago, I presented a Notice of Motion to address Foxtails through our Community Standards Bylaw, to fill a gap that education and City/Local mitigation efforts are unable to address. It was supported by my Council colleagues 14-1 to move forward. On Wednesday this week, it passed through the Community Development Committee and will now head to Council on July 4. Read more about this by reading the June update on my blog and check out my Facebook video for more.
