November 2024

Hello Denise

Hello, Ward 7!

October was a bustling month in Ward 7, filled with events and initiatives that genuinely showcased the spirit of Calgary. First, it was my pleasure to kick off October with the celebration of' 40-Years of Business Improvement Areas (BIA) in Calgary', highlighting the support provided to local businesses by our 5 BIAs. In particular, I'd like to recognize Annie McInnis, Executive Director of the Kensington BIA, who will retire on October 31 after many years of service. Best Wishes, Annie!

Another celebration was renaming the West Hillhurst pedestrian bridge in honour of former Ward 7 Alderman Bev Longstaff, who served on the City Council from 1989 to 2001 before running for Mayor. Bev was undoubtedly a trailblazer who continues to inspire our city today. Thanks, Bev!

As we work together to address Calgary's affordable housing needs, I was pleased to attend the opening of Hope Heights by HomeSpace on 12th Ave/Centre St NW, which introduced 35 new affordable housing units, especially for seniors and mothers with young children. Additionally, I was honoured to speak about another senior housing development in Hounsfield Heights Briar Hill with the groundbreaking of Bethany Care Society's new care home development. Together with my role as a board director of Silvera Seniors organization, the outcomes of these housing initiatives align with my upcoming focus on municipal services for seniors and aging-in-place, where everyone has a place to call home. Lastly, it was my pleasure to participate in another groundbreaking development for student housing in the University District with Gracorp's new tower in Block 22.

Another notable highlight was meeting two groups of bright Grade 5 and 6 students from Briar Hill School. Giving them a tour of Council Chambers and historic City Hall allowed me to reflect on my experience in municipal services when I started in 1984 under the old Electric System, years in Assessment / Taxation, involvement in starting the 3-1-1 service, years of business planning and budgeting, and ultimately running for City Council in 2013 and 2021. I never imagined the impression I made when they all clamoured around me for my autograph. These tours reminded me of the impact of civic education and how the next generation will shape Calgary's future.

Finally, we wrapped up October with a celebration of our local athletes who will represent Calgary at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games. On October 29, City Hall was filled with pride as we recognized these remarkable individuals who inspire us all.

Thank you, Calgary, for being essential to our vibrant community. Let's continue working together to make Ward 7 a thriving place for everyone.

Warm regards,
Councillor Terry Wong

New Winter Maintenance Policy

Calgarians can be confident that crews and contractors are available around the clock, every day of the week, throughout the winter. Community Safety

Message from District 3 office

District 3 communities face various crime and social disorder challenges, with Bridgeland/Riverside and Huntington Hills seeing increased police activity this year. While statistics show where incidents occur, our focus should be on prevention. Simple steps like locking doors, securing vehicles, and using neighborhood watch programs can significantly enhance safety. A well-lit yard and good neighborly relationships can serve as strong deterrents.

For areas with fewer incidents, like Point McKay and Rosemont, we must remain vigilant criminals are drawn to quiet neighborhoods too. No community is immune to theft or disorder. Let’s work together to keep an eye out for one another, report suspicious activities, and make it difficult for crime to infiltrate our lives. Stay safe, stay connected, and let’s strengthen our community spirit.
