May 2, 2023

Dear ,

It's starting to feel like summer out there! 🌻

Our street cleaning crews have been out, which is helping the community wash away the winter weather.

You may have also noticed than an election is upon us! Election signs have popped up over night and the next four weeks will decide which provincial party will lead Alberta's next government.

My office receives questions about the following provincial topics. If these topics matter to you, ask your provincial candidates about them:

1) Funding for new Ward 3 schools

2) A North Regional Health Centre

3) Continued provincial support for the Green Line

Don't forget that Mother's Day is May 14th!

Council News

Calgary Event Centre - Agreement in Principle

The City of Calgary has reached agreements in principle with the Province of Alberta, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC), and the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede to proceed with a significant phase of the Culture and Entertainment District in downtown Calgary including a New Event Centre. To read more about the agreement in principle and my thoughts, visit jasminemian.com/votingrecord.

Compostable Pet Waste Pilot

Always look for one of these logos when choosing a compostable product!

Keep an eye out for one of these signs when purchasing pet waste bags!

The City has officially launched a pilot project focusing on composting pet waste at two off-leash dog parks- Tom Campbell's Hill and Queen's Park Village. Modified green bins will be set up with signage, encouraging pet owners to place compostable bags with waste in them. The most important part of this pilot, and of composting in general, is to know what bags are certifiably compostable by the City of Calgary.

Plastic bags remain the number one contaminant in our composting facilities, largely due to misleading advertising by private industry. Words like "green" or "biodegradable" often confuse consumers into thinking they've purchased a compostable bag. Always check for one of the logos above, or use a brown paper bag, when composting in green bins.

Addressing Foxtail Barley

More good news for dog owners in Calgary!

Foxtail barley is a plant species found across Calgary that poses a large threat to animals, particularly dogs. The seeds of the barley are easily carried by wind, and are often blown from non-residential areas into residential yards and pathways.

The City of Calgary has been piloting micro-clover and urban grass mixes to compete with foxtail barley in high concentrated areas. Now, in addition to this pilot, Administration has been directly by Council to explore addressing the plant on large parcels of undeveloped city land. For tips on what you can do and more information on city efforts, go here.

In The Ward

A preview of the Short-Term project details. Check out the full project details here.

North Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)

Starting this summer, the City of Calgary will begin construction on the remaining North Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects along the BRT corridors on Centre St N and Harvest Hills Blvd N.

This work is crucial to addressing one of the gaps in transit: North Central Calgary. The north continues to have the highest ridership rates in the city, and extending Bus Rapid Transit will help match the service to the demand. The project aims to convert the corridor to a flexible and convertible mobility corridor which will provide robust transit service to north central Calgary while also anticipating the changes Green Line will bring forth.

     These improvements will:
β€’Provide shorter transit travel times
β€’Increase reliability
β€’Enhance comfort and convenience
β€’Improve accessibility
β€’Improve walking and wheeling amenities

General News & Reminders

Some examples of the types of restoration TELUS will be doing throughout the ward.

TELUS Spring Restoration

Spring Restoration is a function related to restoring hard and soft surfaces as part of the TELUS Pure Fibre Installation program. Areas of focus include any ground disturbance that took place in relevant communities impacted by winter weather conditions. If TELUS has been in your neighbourhood this past year, keep an eye out for their postcard with schedule updates. For more details or to reach out to TELUS directly, click here.

Fluoridation Update

As part of the 2021 General Election, 62% of electors voted in favour of reintroducing fluoridation of the municipal water supply. In November 2021, Council directed Administration to begin the process. Bids for construction went to market in March 2023, and is expected we will finalize a partner in June. Based on the current projection of timelines, the fluoridation system should likely be in service June 2024. For more information visit calgary.ca/fluoride.
