October 2024

Hello Denise

As Ward 7 welcome the Autumn hues, my reflection of September's activities fills me and my staff with a profound sense of accomplishment, pride and togetherness. Among these highlights were the unveiling of three new public art installations in Chinatown and participation in break dancing activation at Balmoral Circus in Tuxedo / Mount Pleasant. These highlights are testaments to Ward 7's richness of shared values, cultural appreciation, and sense of community vibrancy. These celebrations also allow our communities to forge continued dialogue, mutual sharing and support, and connection that is symbolic of the collaborative spirit that defines Ward 7. Bravo!

These festive events, alongside our engagements in diverse community events and the Mid-Autumn Festival, emphasizes the vital role of your ongoing commitment to celebrating and uplifting the multitude of voices and talents within our ward. It was my honour to participate in these community get togethers, showcasing the resilience and unity that propel us forward.

As we step into the heart of autumn, City Council's resumed sessions underscore our dedication to thoughtful stewardship and visionary leadership for Ward 7. I'd like to thank Ward 7 for their commitment to Stage 4 Water Restrictions during the summer and their input on critical initiatives including the Green Line LRT, both the Riley and the South Shaganappi Local Area Plans, and input to upcoming 2025 budget deliberations. These decision-making forums are crucial as we constantly navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead to enrich our community's tapestry.

Thank you for your voices and participation as they contribute to the narrative of our community. Your involvement is what makes our community vibrant and unique. Here's to continuing our journey with optimism and unity.

Warm regards,
Councillor Terry Wong

Protect Your Pipes

Remember that any fats, oils, and grease that travel down the drain can block your pipes, resulting in costly sewage backups. Read our tips on how to protect your pipes!

2025 Pre-Roll Consultation Period

The City of Calgary invites commercial property owners to engage in the Pre-Roll Consultation Period to review their preliminary assessment values for 2025. From October 1 to November 15, this period offers non-residential and multi-residential property owners a chance to preview and provide feedback on their upcoming property assessments. By sharing information, ideas, and viewpoints, they can enhance the quality and accuracy of assessments before they are mailed out in January.

Volunteer opportunities

Join a fantastic group of volunteers who dedicate their time, skills, and passion to the various services and programs offered by the city. There’s a diverse selection of volunteer opportunities available for you to explore!

ChargeYYC multi-residential Pilot Program

The City of Calgary is introducing ChargeYYC, a new pilot program to assist residents of apartments, townhouses, rowhouses, and other multi-residential buildings in installing electric vehicle (EV) chargers. This initiative reflects the City’s commitment to advancing low-carbon mobility.

Beginning September 24, 2024, building owners and residents can apply for Phase 1 of the program, which offers financial incentives of up to $4,000 to create a plan for installing EV chargers. ChargeYYC seeks to streamline the installation process and lower costs, making it easier for more Calgarians to transition to electric vehicles.

Pickleball Courts at Foothills Athletic Park

The City of Calgary opened 12 brand-new dedicated pickleball courts at Foothills Athletic Park (2431 Crowchild Tr. N.W.) on September 23, 2024. This development follows the removal of the old Volleydome in 2023, uncovering previously non-functional tennis courts that were ripe for transformation. This summer, we converted these courts into some of Calgary’s first dedicated outdoor pickleball facilities.

These new courts are a great addition to Foothills Athletic Park. They are managed by our existing staff, which means there are no extra operating costs. Calgarians can now enjoy the courts on a first-come, first-served basis. Starting in 2025, we will integrate these courts into our Live and Play booking system, making reserving a spot and enjoying a game more accessible.

Calgary Winter City Design Competition

Each fall, the City invites designers, artists, and students to envision innovative winter city designs for our downtown. We encourage everyone to explore and challenge the limits of Calgary's public spaces during the winter season.

In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge that we live, work and play on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy, made up of the Siksika, Piikani, Amskaapipiikani and Kainai First Nations; the Îethka Nakoda Wîcastabi First Nations, comprised of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations; and the Tsuut’ina First Nation. The city of Calgary is also homeland to the historic Northwest Métis and to the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, Métis Nation Battle River Territory, Nose Hill Métis District 5, Elbow Métis District 6, and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.
