June 2024

Hello Denise

Thank you to everyone for all of your efforts to conserve water amidst the 16th Avenue Watermain Break and water shortages. Your efforts have been greatly appreciated. At this time our businesses in the Montgomery and Bowness areas need your support, please shop local when you have an opportunity to do so.

I also wanted to thank all of you who participated in neighbour day and those who were able to attend our Council of Communities meeting where we discussed issues facing our seniors populations. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible during Canada Day festivities. I wanted to pose this question to you as a closing remark, what in the City keeps you up at night?

Thank you - Terry

City Council News

16 Ave Watermain Break

On June 5th, 2024, a critical watermain broke in the Ward 7 Community of Montgomery. Councillor Wong was quick to the scene on that day and returned twice the following day with City Administration, engineers, and tradespeople to assess the cause of the water main break and evaluate the situation for remediation and restoration of full water services. For the days following the break, Councillor Wong has engaged the Emergency Operations Centre team twice a day to provide perspective of the Montgomery neighbourhood, its residents, and its businesses. He has also reached out to support Ward 1 City Councillor Sonya Sharp and the Bowness community whose residents who were under a boil water advisory until June 10th.

On his own time and expense, Councillor Wong brought thirty cases of bottled water early Saturday morning to the Bowness community to supplement the City water trucks and provide water for citizens of Bowness. This spurred other Council members to do the same, and the generosity of Calgary communities also came forward to help Bowness in their time of need.

Since then, Councillor Wong has been engaged with City Administration behind the scenes as they conducted water main pipe inspections which resulted it the discover of five ‘hot spots’ (i.e., critical pipeline conditions) which required immediate and urgent remediation. This work was expected to extend the water restrictions for an addition 3-5 weeks, but we have since received an updated timeline that remediation should be complete with the 3-week period.

During this remediation period, Councillor Wong has been in contact with the Montgomery Business Improvement Area and the City’s Business Support team to ensure local business are minimally impacted and supported along with all Bowness residents.

Please see our website here for a series of City notifications on the watermain break and updated information.

City Building Program

 |Phase 3|

The Calgary Plan. Have your say. The City is updating plans that will shape the future of Calgary to ensure our city continues to be a great place to live and thrive. The City Building Program is planning for the future of how we move, build, and use land across the city. It will align and strengthen The City’s tools and plans that will work together to create a clear, concise, and central 30-year vision and 10-year action plan.

The Calgary Plan sets out direction and policies that help The City make decisions about future land use, mobility networks, servicing, and investment. This is The City’s ‘north star’ in how we plan and grow our city.

Since October 2023, the City Building Program team has been working hard to capture what Calgarians need and want to see for the future of our city. The draft Calgary Plan is ready for public input, and we want to hear from you. Phase 3 of engagement focuses on reviewing the draft Calgary Plan and collecting feedback on the proposed direction.

Calgarians are invited to participate in helping to shape the future of Calgary. To learn more about the draft Calgary Plan, provide your input, or to find the project team at one of many in-person community events, please visit calgary.ca/citybuilding.

Ward 7 is situated in Calgary, a city renowned for community connections at the confluence where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The city of Calgary is also homeland to the historic Northwest Métis and to the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, Métis Nation Battle River Territory, Nose Hill Métis District 5, Elbow Métis District 6, and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.
