Hello Ward 12,

March is Community Association Awareness Month!

Community associations support neighbourhoods throughout Calgary by serving the needs of their residents and providing a voice for community life. Led by volunteers, these associations offer social, educational and recreational opportunities close to home. Community associations are dedicated to making sure our communities offer a great place to live, work and play.

Our Ward also has Residents Associations, commonly known as Homeowner Associations, in many of our neighbourhoods. So, what’s the difference?

Community Associations connect with the City and other levels of government, often having representatives at their meetings. If you are looking for a new crosswalk or concerned about your snow clearing, your local CA is an excellent place to connect with others, discuss your concerns, and get them to our office. Community Associations also work hard to provide fun events and other reasons for the community to gather. Their annual memberships are non-mandatory, but very much needed.

Residence Associations (or HOAs) are focused on a neighbourhood’s amenities that are NOT under the City’s purview (think: gated amenities with limited access). They will also often provide events to their community. Their fees are mandatory.

Often, these two groups will work together to accomplish great things for a community and will run almost seamlessly along with each other. A lot of people don’t know their community has both!

Both CA boards and RA/HOA boards rely heavily on volunteers from the community. If you have a few hours each month to spare, joining on of these boards would be a huge asset to your community. Meet people that live close by while making your community a better place to live.

Show your support for your local CA and all the work they do by purchasing your membership annually and coming out to their events!

Visit the Community Profiles section of our website to learn more about your CA.

This winter has been particularly hard on our roads, leaving many potholes around our city. Pothole repairs are completed by operational crews and identified in 311 citizen reports and through routine inspections. Inspections are completed and repairs are prioritized using a five-point scale based on pothole severity, safety impacts and location. Read more.

Calgary Pothole Map

This map shows the potholes that have been reported, inspected and repaired in Calgary. To help us reduce duplicate requests, you can check the map to see if we already have a pothole repair request for the location that concerns you. The map is updated regularly with current data.

Similarly, this winter and current spring thaw have created treacherous ice issues all over the City. If you have a problem spot out front of your home, do your best to clear a drainage path to the closest storm drain.

If the storm drain is blocked, follow these steps if it's safe and possible to do:

- Clear snow, ice or debris like leaves and sticks away from the drain.

- Create a channel to help water flow

Do not attempt to clean a storm drain if:

- there is significant accumulation of ice,

- it’s submerged in water,

- or if the drain is full of debris or if the grate is damaged.

If there is an area that is particularly hazardous, please contact 311 with the concern so they can prioritize it accordingly. Read more about storm drains.

Pooled water on your street?

In some areas, The City installs inlet control devices in the storm drains to manage how fast water flows into the pipes from the storm drain. If the water on the road or street has not drained after 90-120 minutes, please contact 311 or fill out the online service request.

If any matter isn't dealt with in a timely matter, please send us the Service Request number provided by 311 and we can follow up.
