Hello Ward 12,

I have been hearing from many of you about your concerns regarding a number of contentious issues lately. Whether it's people pushing for reviews of services and spending, safety on Calgary Transit, a desire for better snow and ice removal or disproval of the recent tax increase. It has been a particularly tough season balancing the realities facing The City with the feedback of the good people of Ward 12.

The media has also provided a lot of coverage to topics like the wage increase for Calgary City Council. Although this is a recommendation from an independent committee to purposely keep wage discussions out of the hands of politicians, it’s impossible to ignore the optics of it in this current political climate. I encourage you to read my blog post to learn more. The new committee is currently being struck to provide recommendations into 2025 after the next election.

Recently, the Single Use Bylaw has come into effect which has many people frustrated with using drive-thrus and take-out options in particular. You can read more information about the Single-Use Bylaw and how it aligns with other jurisdictions. You can also make sure your thoughts on this new bylaw are properly logged for statistical purposes by reporting online to 311, and you can always reach out to our office to share your experiences and thoughts on this or any issue.

Although keeping up with social media comments and tags can be a job unto itself, I do my best to keep up with what is happening online. If you have concerns that you would like me to know directly, please email our office at ward12@calgary.ca or reply to this email, and let me know your preferred way of communicating. I’m open to phone calls, emails, and coffee chats. I am frequently in the ward for engagement opportunities including this week’s Office in the Ward, and my staff attends Community Association meetings and engagement opportunities curated by our local CPS Community Resource Officer regularly on Tuesdays. Dates and times are listed below or visit Connect with Evan for more information.

Sincerely,

Cllr. Evan Spencer

Rezoning for Housing - With the approval of Home is Here: The City of Calgary’s Housing Strategy, Council directed to take actions to address the housing crisis. One of these actions is the proposed citywide rezoning to a base residential district, or zone. This change will help increase the supply of housing to meet demand. This will also significantly reduce the costs and timelines for permit approvals, and allow for greater housing variety and options to suit your needs. Info sessions are happening now, so check out the website for details on how to have your day.

GamePLAN - The City is reimagining how public recreation is delivered in Calgary. GamePLAN is a long-term vision and strategy to shape our approach to delivering inclusive, accessible and sustainable recreation services for the next 10 to 30 years. GamePLAN will guide future business planning and investment, shape policy and The City’s approach to service delivery.

City Building - The City of Calgary is updating plans that will shape the Calgary of the future and make sure our city keeps on being a great place to live. We want to hear from you.

Calgary River Valleys Project - Making careful decisions about how we plan, protect, develop and build in the floodplain is key to Calgary’s flood resilience. The Government of Alberta has released draft updated Flood Hazard Area maps for communities across the province, including Calgary.
