April 2025

Hello Denise

Thank you for everything you do to make our community one of the most desirable places to live, work, operate a business, and attend our many public, private, and post-secondary schools. It is my honour and privilege to be your City Councillor.

Every day, this office and I are challenged to meet the aspirations, expectations, and demands of our Ward 7 constituents. We are a collection of 21 inner-city and downtown-oriented communities with diverse history, heritage, culture and aspirations. We have every possible urban-based neighbourhood type from low and high-density residential to commercial/office to special purpose to industrial-use to health and education institutional to arts and cultural entertainment uses. We also have the full range of building forms and scales (i.e. mass and height) imaginable. Building a multi-community local area plan to guide development for the next 30 years of our land use, transportation, heritage, amenities, and more is complex and challenging.

We can’t possibly solve everyone’s needs and wants, but we certainly can try. Last March, the Council voted in favour of the new Riley Communities Local Area Plan (LAP) and the South Shaganappi Communities LAP despite continued consternation about over-densification of housing (including on-street parking) in our low-density, single-family communities. Amendments are needed to ensure the Council does not approve contextual development despite our best efforts. As such, efforts to improve these LAPs in the coming months (years) will be the mission of this Councillor and office. In the meantime, with the Administration, the Ward 7 staff, and I, we will seek to improve these LAPs through amendments under a new Council which, hopefully, is more appreciative of the existing history, heritage, community character, and evolving needs rather than an arbitrary aspirational plan.

As we move into the summer months, I will resume my spring/summer community and neighbourhood engagements through community association/centre festivals and events, Council of Communities leadership meetings, coffee meetings at neighbourhood Tim Hortons (call me for a coffee and chat anytime), and visitation on your streets and at your residences. I hope to reconnect now that winter (or did I speak too soon) is over.

Thank you!

Warm regards,
Councillor Terry Wong

CITY INITIATIVES AND EVENTS

April Speed Campaign

There is never a good reason to speed, but plenty of reasons to slow down. As drivers, we are responsible for adjusting our speed based on road conditions. Speed limits aren’t the only guide – conditions like sun glare, snow/slush, surface quality, poor visibility (night, fog, rain) can make roads more hazardous. Just because you're not exceeding the speed limit doesn't mean you're driving safely for the conditions. Be safe! Slow down!

Traffic Safety Team Launch

The City of Calgary has launched a new Traffic Safety Team to improve road safety. This team will focus on:

  • Enforcing speed limits in playground zones
  • Educating the public on traffic safety
  • Addressing noisy vehicle violations

Starting this month, they'll work closely with the Calgary Police Service to enhance traffic enforcement and public education, aiming to create safer and more livable communities. To read more about the traffic safety team.

Green Light for the Green Line!

Green Line LRT Project has officially received the green light! On March 18, the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta gave final approval to our updated Green Line Business Case. This means we can start construction on the SE Segment of the Green Line LRT this year and advance work on the Downtown Segment.

A new business unit, "Green Line LRT – SE Project," has been created to oversee the construction from Shepard in the SE to the Event Centre/Grand Central Station.

The City of Calgary Enhances Procurement Practices

To counteract the impact of U.S. tariffs, the City of Calgary is enhancing its procurement practices to prioritize local and Canadian suppliers.

Starting March 31, 2025, the Social Procurement Questionnaire weighting will be increased to 10% for large procurements of goods, materials, and services. For smaller procurements, the City will aim to source all quotes from local suppliers whenever possible.

These changes are part of the City's ongoing efforts to support local businesses and strengthen supply chain resilience.

Important Update for Calgary's Short-Term Rentals

Starting April 1, 2025, Calgary's new short-term rental business license amendments are in effect. These changes, approved by City Council, aim to balance tourism, housing affordability, and community well-being. Key updates include:

  • New license Types: Different licenses for primary and non-primary residences.
  • Updated fees: renewal and new license fees adjusted.
  • Expanded definition: rentals up to 180 days now require a license.
  • No more condo board consent: simplified application process.

City staff have been working diligently to prepare the clubhouses and maintain the courses for the best possible spring conditions and golf experience. We share the excitement of those eager to get on our courses and are committed to providing an exceptional experience for all golfers.

Online booking release dates will be announced on Calgary.ca/golf and are open now. Tee times begin Tuesday, April 1 at Shaganappi Point (weather dependent) – 1200 26 Street SW, with a modified Front 9/Valley 9 routing.
